Ten realistic routes for Indian students, with entrance exams, course length and the latest job-readiness data side by side.

The career options after 12th in India are far wider than the old doctor-engineer choice, but the big entrance exams still pull in millions of students every year.
This guide lays out ten realistic routes for 2027: who each one suits, how you get in, how long the first course takes, and what the latest data says about graduate job-readiness.
We have kept it honest. Where there is no reliable number, we say so instead of guessing.
How to read this list: The order is not a ranking. The best option is the one that fits your interests, marks, budget and patience. If you are still unsure how to decide, read our companion guide on how to choose a career after 12th.
Career options after 12th: the big picture in numbers
Three national exams run by the National Testing Agency (NTA) decide a large share of first-year seats. Their 2025 registrations show where the crowd goes.
How many students registered for the big after-12th exams in 2025
Registered candidates, lakh (unique candidates for JEE Main across both sessions)
NEET alone drew 22.76 lakh registrations in 2025, according to NTA’s NEET (UG) 2025 result press release. JEE (Main) had 15.40 lakh unique candidates (NTA’s JEE (Main) 2025 result note), and CUET (UG) had 13.55 lakh (NTA’s CUET (UG) 2025 result note).
Seats in the most sought-after colleges are a small fraction of these numbers. That is not a reason to avoid these routes. It is a reason to keep a second option ready.
NEET (UG) registrations, 2019–2025
Registered candidates, lakh
The NEET trend shows how quickly the medical route has grown: from 15.19 lakh registrations in 2019 to a peak of 24.06 lakh in 2024, easing to 22.76 lakh in 2025.

The ten career options in detail
For each route: who it suits, how you get in, and one thing students often learn too late.
1. Engineering and technology
Suits students who like maths, logic and building things. The main entry is JEE (Main), with JEE (Advanced) for the IITs and state entrance tests for many state colleges.
Specialisation matters as much as the degree. The India Skills Report 2026 puts computer science graduates at 80% employability and mechanical at 63%.
2. Medicine and allied health
For PCB students who want clinical or health work. NEET (UG) is the gateway to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seats, and some nursing and allied programmes use it too.
Competition is intense, so look seriously at allied fields like pharmacy, physiotherapy and medical lab technology as well.
3. Commerce, chartered accountancy and finance
Good for students comfortable with numbers and detail. You can register for the CA Foundation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India after Class 12, or take a B.Com through CUET or university admissions.
Commerce graduates showed the sharpest rise in the 2026 report, to 62.81% employability from 55%.
4. Law
Suits readers, debaters and careful thinkers from any stream. CLAT covers most National Law Universities, and AILET is the test for NLU Delhi. Integrated BA LLB programmes take five years.
Internships during the course count heavily when you look for your first job.
5. Design
For visual thinkers who enjoy solving problems for people. Key entrance routes are UCEED for B.Des at IITs, NID DAT and the NIFT entrance. A portfolio and drawing practice help from Class 11 onwards.
Digital product design is a growing branch; our UI/UX and creative AI course is one short, skill-first way to try it.
6. Data science and analytics
Good for curious students who like patterns and maths. A BCA, B.Sc (Statistics, Maths or Computer Science) or B.Tech gives the base, and Excel, SQL and Python skills make you employable.
You can also start with a focused programme, such as our data science course in Noida or data analytics course at Connaught Place.
7. Digital marketing and media
For creative, curious students from any stream. Employers here often hire on a portfolio of real campaigns, content or videos rather than a specific degree.

8. Defence (officer entry)
For fit, disciplined students who want a service career. The National Defence Academy exam is conducted by UPSC twice a year. The Army wing is open to any stream, while the Air Force and Navy wings need Physics and Maths in Class 12.
Check age and eligibility rules in each official notification; they are strict.
9. Humanities, psychology and social sciences
For students drawn to people, society and ideas. CUET (UG) is the main route into central universities. Careers include psychology, journalism, policy research, teaching and civil services preparation.
Arts graduates scored 55.55% in the 2026 report. Adding a practical skill, such as writing for the web or data basics, makes a real difference.
10. Hotel management and hospitality
For outgoing students who enjoy service and travel. NCHM JEE, run by NTA, leads to the three-year B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration at institutes affiliated to NCHMCT.
Expect long hours early on. Internships in hotels during the course are the norm.
