Career counselling in Delhi NCR ranges from a fifteen-minute chat at a fair to a multi-week process with tests, reports and follow-ups, often at similar-sounding prices.

This guide explains what good counselling actually involves, the different types of counsellors, which credentials are worth checking, and the questions to ask before you pay.

If you already want names, see our companion list of top career counsellors in Delhi NCR.

Disclosure: SkillCircle publishes this guide. We run skills training, not independent counselling, and our own course advisers talk about our courses. That is exactly the kind of difference this guide helps you spot.

What career counselling in Delhi NCR is, and is not

Career counselling helps you work out which careers fit you and how to get there. It looks at your interests, strengths, values, marks and circumstances.

It is not the same as admission counselling. Seat-allotment processes such as JoSAA for engineering or the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for medical seats are official admission rounds. They tell you how to get a seat, not which career suits you.

The need is real. The India Skills Report 2026 found 56.35% of tested candidates job-ready in 2026, which means a large share are not yet there.

Better choices early on, and the right skills alongside a degree, are how that gap closes.

What a good career counselling process looks like

  • An intake conversation. The counsellor asks about your interests, subjects, marks, family situation and worries before any test.
  • Assessment, where useful. Standardised tests of interests, aptitude and personality, with a clear explanation of what each one measures.
  • A proper debrief. A live session, ideally with a parent, that turns the report into options. This is where most of the value sits.
  • A written plan. Shortlisted careers, entrance routes, timelines and a backup for each.
  • Follow-up. A way to ask questions as results, exams and admissions unfold.

Credentials worth checking

Anyone can use the title “career counsellor”. That makes the background behind it important.

  • Psychology qualifications. Someone offering clinical psychological assessment should be registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Ask for the registration number.
  • Training in career guidance. Look for formal certification or years of documented career counselling work.
  • Track record you can see. Published articles, school partnerships or university talks are easier to verify than testimonials.
  • Test quality. Ask who designed the assessments and whether they were made for Indian students.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Who exactly will counsel me, and what is their background?
  • Which tests do you use, and what do they measure?
  • How long is the live session, and can my parents join?
  • What will I take away: a report, a written plan, or both?
  • Is follow-up included, and for how long?
  • What is the total fee, in writing, and what is not included?
  • Do you earn commissions from any college, coaching centre or course you might recommend?

Red flags to watch for

  • Guarantees. No one can guarantee an admission, a job or a salary.
  • A report with no conversation. A long PDF without a debrief is a product, not counselling.
  • Pressure to pay today. Good counsellors are comfortable with you taking time to decide.
  • Every road leads to one course. If the advice always ends at the adviser’s own programme, it is sales.
  • Salary hype. Headline pay, like that in our list of the highest paid jobs in Delhi, usually takes many years to reach.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in a career counselling session?

A good session starts with a conversation about your interests, marks and situation. It may include standardised tests, followed by a live debrief that turns the results into a shortlist of careers and a written plan with backups.

Is career counselling worth it after 12th?

It can be, especially if you are torn between options or disagree with your family. The value comes from the conversation and the plan, not from a report alone.

How do I check if a career counsellor is qualified?

Ask about their training and years of career counselling work, and look for a track record you can verify. Anyone offering clinical psychological assessment should be registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India.

Is career counselling the same as JoSAA or MCC counselling?

No. JoSAA and MCC are official seat-allotment processes for engineering and medical admissions. Career counselling helps you decide which career and course suit you in the first place.

Where can I get free career counselling in Delhi?

The National Career Service portal run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment says its services are free and lists counsellors and career centres. Its helpline is 1514. School counsellors are another free option.

Can a counsellor guarantee me a job or admission?

No. Treat any guarantee of an admission, job or salary as a red flag.
