If you searched for skills to learn after 12th commerce, science or arts, you probably want ideas that build on the subjects you already studied. That is a smart place to start.

This guide goes stream by stream. For each one it suggests short-term skills that fit, the entry-level roles they lead to and what those roles report earning on AmbitionBox. It also shows which skills work for everyone, whatever your stream.

Pay figures are averages people reported, checked on 17 October 2026. Early pay is usually modest, and it depends on the role, the company, the city and your experience.

How to read this guide: Your stream is a starting point, not a fence. Many people work in fields unrelated to their Class 12 subjects. For a general list, see our guide to the best skills to learn after 12th in 2027.

Does your stream decide your skills?

Less than you might think. Streams shape what you find easy and which degrees are open to you, but most practical skills can be learned by anyone.

The numbers show how varied the starting points are. According to AISHE 2021-22, Arts has the largest share of undergraduate enrolment, at 34.2%, followed by Science (14.8%), Commerce (13.3%) and Engineering and Technology (11.8%).

The India Skills Report 2026 shows that graduates from all three streams are improving in job readiness. Commerce graduates rose to 62.81% from 55%, science graduates to 61% from 58%, and arts graduates reached 55.55%.

The gap between streams is smaller than the gap between people who practise a skill and those who do not. That is the real case for starting early.
